Fourth of July and Cliffs of Moher

Greetings from Galway

We have had a busy but wonderful couple of days in Galway.  The weather has totally cooperated especially for our trip to the Cliffs of Moher today.

Yesterday was Galway's celebration of July 4 and the Irish certainly know how to throw a party.  The parade was outstanding and we had front row seats.  The highlight, at least for the girls, were the sailors from the Volvo Ocean Race.  Each team marched in the parade and there is no question that they are an impressive group of athletes.  Elvis was present as were Minnie and Mickey, of course.  Swing dancers, sailors, cheerleaders and the requisite Marching Band all entertained the crowd.  The fireworks were spectacular.  We heard the Obama sent them personally although that may be a rumour.  The entire group made their way safely back to the residence before midnight, tired but very excited about our first full day in Galway.

Today 34 of us travelled to the Cliffs of Moher and experienced that site in full sunshine - a rare occurence.  We also visited a 12 Century Abbey and a Castle as well as the Aillwee Caves.  Back to Galway for dinner and a free evening which we spent back at the residence resting and doing some work.  Tomorrow we are off to the Aran Islands for another full day of touring.  It has been a really busy start to the trip but we feel very lucky to have been here for the festival.

A quote overheard today from a student "I'm going to cry when we have to leave this place".

Cheers.
